The Bargello Museum Tour
The Bargello, or Palazzo del Popolo (Palace of the People) dates back to 1255 and is one of the oldest buildings in Florence. Its austere fortress style evokes its sinister past as a prison from the 16th to the 19th century. In 1865 it became one of the most important museums in Florence with a superb collection of Florentine Renaissance sculpture, including numerous works by Donatello, Verrocchio and the della Robbia family.
Florentine sculpture from the 16th century is also well represented with pieces by Michelangelo, Cellini and Giambologna. The Bargello is a truly appealing sanctuary of beautiful art, without the hustle and bustle of crowds found elsewhere. The building also houses a notable collection of decorative arts, Majolica glazed pottery, ivories, armour and much more. This is my favourite place in Florence, a peaceful retreat for the heart and soul.
